SE/30 PDS Slot Multiple Upgrades
120 Pin Right Angle Connectors for sale

DO NOT PLUG ANY DAYSTAR ACCELERATOR INTO THE SE/30 PDS SLOT WITHOUT USING A DAYSTAR PDS SLOT ADAPTER!
DayStar and the SE/30:
•DayStar's first accelerator for the SE/30 plugged into the logic board 68030 socket, thus leaving the PDS slot available. Logic boards with unsocketed 68030 were returned to DayStar factory for modification.
•DayStar then made an adapter for the SE/30 PDS slot that allows using DayStar's "universal" accelerators, but it does not have a PDS passthrough slot and is now very rare.
•DayStar also made an adapter for the IIsi PDS slot that allows using DayStar's "universal" accelerators. The IIsi adapter does have a PDS passthrough slot and is less rare than the SE/30 adapter.
The IIsi and SE/30 PDS Slots:
They must be the same because Asante made Ethernet cards that work in both. So, why not use the less rare IIsi adapter in the SE/30 and gain a PDS passthrough slot in the bargain? But the IIsi adapter was not designed to fit into the SE/30.
This web page is devoted to using the SE/30 PDS slot with various combinations of EtherNet card, DayStar IIsi PDS adapter/DayStar universal accelerator, video card, and 120 pin right angle VME connectors.
Our attempts to clone DayStar PDS adapters have been abandoned.
Bugs:
With the DayStar IIsi PDS adapter in the SE/30 we have seen, and reported below, minor (firmware?) bugs and their workarounds.

NOTES:
The SE/30 power supply is rated at 75 Watts max at its output. The wattage figures above were measured at input, which has rating greater than 75 Watts. I.e., for a power supply efficiency of 70% the input rating would be 107 Watts.

SE/30ec:
Asante EtherNet + DayStar IIsi PDS adapter + DayStar PowerCache 50 MHz.
Modifications are:
•Remove HD bracket.
•Relocate HD, by either:
•Drill 4 holes in floppy case, mount HD directly on floppy case.
   OR
•Drill 3 holes in chassis floor, mount HD, vertically, between floppy drive and power supply.
•Plug 120 pin right angle connecter into Asante card.
•Cover side of HD and floppy with electrical tape.

Tested OK.
The AC power is 60 watts.

Asante EtherNet + DayStar IIsi PDS adapter + DayStar Turbo 040 33 MHz.
Modifications are:
(same as SE/30ec above)

The DayStar Turbo card is angled slightly upwards because an IC on its cache card is resting on top of the HD.
The DayStar QuadControl control panel crashed the SE/30. That was fixed by installing Mode32 v 7.5.

Tested OK.
The AC power is 62 watts.

SE/30egs:
Asante EtherNet + Micron Xceed video + internal grayscale.
No chassis modifications are required.
The Asante EtherNet card's slot address jumpers must be set to get a different slot address than video card.
The Asante's jumper settings are marked on the card.
The PDS stack will be leaning over a bit due to interference with HD bracket.

SE/30cgs: with floppy Drive
DayStar IIsi PDS adapter + DayStar PowerCache 50 MHz + Micron Xceed video + internal grayscale.
Retaining the floppy drive requires more modifications.
Modifications:
•The IIsi PDS adapter won't fit unless the chassis slot is enlarged.
•The IIsi PDS adapter's pass-through connector is changed from straight to right angle.
•1 5/8 inch is removed from the rear end of the hard drive bracket so that the Xceed GrayScale harness will reach.
•The floppy drive and HD are relocated, back by 8/32 inch and sideways by 8/32 inch.
•The front case floppy entry slot is widened by 6/32 inch towards center.
•The longer L shaped side bracket is bent to be 3/8 inch, which is same length as the other, shorter, L shaped side bracket.
•The PowerCache card plugs into a right angle connector that has REVERSE KEYING MODIFICATION.

This setup tested OK.
The AC power is 63 Watts.

SE/30cgs: without floppy drive
DayStar IIsi PDS adapter + DayStar PowerCache 50 MHz + Micron Xceed video + internal grayscale.
Removing the floppy drive simplifies the required modifications.
Modifications:
•The IIsi PDS adapter won't fit unless the chassis slot is enlarged.
•The floppy drive and HD bracket are removed and the HD is relocated next to power supply.

We haven't tested this yet but it should work because the SE/30cgs with floppy works.

Asante EtherNet + DayStar IIsi PDS adapter + DayStar PowerCache 50 MHz + Micron Xceed video + internal grayscale.
The case won't fit because the Xceed Color 30 card is too high.
After much thought we still haven't figured out a way to fit everything without cutting a hole in the top of the case.
 System Bug:
Setting "PowerCache" switch "On" in the Power Central 2.2 control panel causes System instability.
The bug disappears if the EtherNet card is removed from stack.
 System Bug Fix:
Discard the Power Central 2.2 control panel.
  OR,
Set "PowerCache" switch "Off", which does not cause loss of System speed because, in this setup, the PowerCache card is always enabled regardless of the setting of the "PowerCache" switch in the Power Central 2.2 control panel.
Modifications are:
•Discard HD bracket
Relocate HD, by either:
•Drill 4 holes in floppy case, mount HD directly on floppy drive.
   OR
•Drill three 5/32 diameter holes, for #6-32 screws, in chassis floor, mount HD, vertically, between floppy drive and power supply.
•Modify Asante card by changing pass-through connector from straight to right angle.
•Plug 120 pin right angle connecter into DayStar IIsi PDS adapter card.
•Bend front L shaped bracket to get 3/8" protrusion and cover both L brackets with electrical tape.
•Add extension to J4 of Micron Xceed wire harness.

The Asante EtherNet card's slot address jumpers must be set to get different slot address than video card.
The Asante's jumper settings are marked on the card.

The AC power is 65 watts.

SE/40etgs:
This setup would have EtherNet + DayStar Turbo 040 accelerator + Micron Xceed internal grayscale.
But, our testing has confirmed that the Xceed Color 30 video card is not compatible with the DayStar Turbo 040.
This was also verified without the EtherNet card, and using DayStar SE/30 instead of DayStar IIsi PDS adapter.
